Spiders
There is a large variety of spiders in Ontario below are the most common types of spiders found.
Wolf Spider
These large spiders are often the greatest concern to homeowners, due to their size and speed. They create great discomfort to those whom are afraid of spiders. They have excellent eye site and will often flee when in the presence of humans. They primarily hunt at night and can cover large areas in their search.
Sac Spider
The sac spiders are generic looking ground running spiders and may be the most common structural infesting spider. They are typically monochromatic in colour, either yellows, tans, browns and grays. Medium in size, have elongated abdomens and average sized legs. Their silk retreat/enclosures can commonly be found in corners of the ceiling and under furniture.
Funnel Weavers
Easily identified by their trampoline like web that usually emanates from a hole or crevice amongst a wall or woodpile, creating a funnel like shape. These spiders are rarely found within the confines of the house if adequate housekeeping is maintained, therefore they are typically only found in basements and cellars. These spiders can be rather large in size and move with great striking speed.
Cellar Spiders
Cellar spiders are often confused with the daddy long leg
spider but they are two different species. The cellar spider has long flimsy legs and hang upside down on their webs, typically found in basements, garages, barns and sheds. They can often be seen holding their egg sack in their mouth.
Orb Weavers
Orb weaver spiders are probably the most recognizable of spiders, from their archetypal two-dimensional orb shaped web, with a continuous spiral of silk emanating from the central portion with multiple radial spokes. Orb weavers can be identified by the web alone as each species has unique characteristics.
Comb-footed Spiders
There are a large variety of comb-footed spiders, including the black widow spider which had been recorded and seen in Ontario. Comb-footed spiders are characterized by the comb like hairs at the ends of their legs. These are used to manipulate the silk from their spinnerets. They're webbing is often observed in low lying areas such as under and amongst furniture and wood piles.
